“Because of the routines we follow, we often forget that life is an ongoing adventure. . . Life is pure adventure, and the sooner we realize that, the quicker we will be able to treat life as art: to bring all our energies to each encounter, to remain flexible enough to notice and admit when what we expected to happen did not happen. We need to remember that we are created creative and can invent new scenarios as frequently as they are needed.”

NEWS
things are slowing down for the summer, and not much is happening in the world of collage, so we thought we’d share a few older articles and interviews:
The more you consider Blake’s multifarious collages, in two and three dimensions, and incorporating everything from lead cowboys to cupboard doors, the more you realise how fundamental the principles of assembly and collage are to art in general - The king of collage – an interview with Peter Blake - via Apollo
Matisse isn’t the only artist to have wielded a pair of scissors – Cut That Out showcases 50 designers and studios worldwide who are a true cut above - Can they cut it? The artists making collage cool again – in pictures - via The Guardian
Known for her vivid collages of female figures whose billowing garments embody an array of landscapes, architecture, flora, fauna, artworks, and symbolic objects, Johanna Goodman continues to celebrate the dynamism and diversity of women throughout the ages - Billowing Garments Encompass Diverse Narratives in Johanna Goodman’s Monumental Collages - via Colossal
German artist Matthieu Bourel works in collage to create characters and scenes that we've never seen before. In his series titled Duplicity Serie, he fractures vintage photographs and arranges them in multiple ways over a single composition; pieces of the image are extracted and expanded, and someone's face might appear several times in different iterations - Surreal Collages of Vintage Portraits by Matthieu Bourel - via My Modern Met
Yasmina boasts a vast array of photo series, each with its own unique story but each donning the artist’s individuality and signature collage style. She usually starts a series by photographing her subject intimately on film. “From there it’s all about trial and error when it comes to my collaging.” After each image is shot on film, they eventually become a hand-made collage that uses different techniques such as splicing, sewing, cutting and chopping, without ever relying on digital manipulation - Beirut-born Yasmina Hilal organically creates mixed media collages – cutting, gluing and sewing away from digital manipulation - via It’s Nice That
PCC: A selection of challenge submissions from last week is up on our website and can be seen here, the image prompt for next week is available to download here

CIS BAKKER
Cis' view on profession and life, is the expression of meaning, through experiment, stumbling upon and meaningful coincidence, combined with an intense love for light, colors and the trivial. Art to Cis, is a necessity; spiritual food to nourish humanity, to reflect and strive for growth.
Recycling is a very important pillar of her work; “Every unchancy work can be the breeding ground for a better.” Other pillars are eclecticism, contrast - opposites, continuous reinvention, transformation, chronological development, and a tendency to illustrate the existential.
“I am the illustrator of my own life, and the universally sensible, recognizable. I paint and draw. Dealing with dilemmas I solved through interpretations, angles of view that present themselves simultaneously in color, shape, diffuse, let exist besides and mixed together. A layered space, with facets that according to the point of view (mood, day, actuality) put a different emphasis on a possible explanation or meaning. This is the best possible freedom for me, to lose in, in this way, a multi-interpretable reality”.

LISA SHEETS
Lisa Sheets' mixed media collages explore history, gender roles, and cultural norms, and how these things impact our lives. Sheets uses combinations of religious and historical iconography along with pop culture images to stress the sacred in our modern day lives. She emphasizes the constantly shifting and changing roles that shape us, and examines how we unravel those roles through history.
Using a combination of found/recycled materials such as S&H green stamps and sewing patterns, along with digital copies of vintage photos gleaned from advertising, family albums, and historical databases, Sheets creates a lens to examine a glimpse back to our history and reflect on its influence on our present. She often uses repetition and digital manipulation of source images to emphasize key imagery and create symmetrical compositions.
